Want to get in shape? Trouble starts in Oct right about Halloween night till New Years

Posted by | Uncategorized | No Comments

Well it’s that time of year again. I go to a lot of functions, business meeting/parties for the holidays and I can always count on the reliable, “Hey, you train martial arts…man I need to get in shape!” Usually they are mentioning they gained weight from eating all their children’s Halloween candy…then the over eating flows right into the Thanksgiving feast and how they love eating all this delicious food. Then going right into the Christmas swing of more over eating and diners and parties with their friends and co-workers. I wish I had a dollar every time I got this tossed at me.
I can say I would be driving a Lamborghini. I don’t mind talking about this to anyone, in fact, I love talking about martial arts- Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, MMA, NHB, Karate. Kickboxing , boxing, wrestling, Judo anything at all , when this happens I am in my zone.

So the next question I get is how much is it? I then follow with whats your health worth to you? I get a blank stare at times. Then I tell them to come in and try a free class or a free week if that is what you need to see the benefits of a great program here at Tarpeins Dojo’s and Martial Arts. If they are interested in hearing more, I tell the potential student some great thing the academies offer.
I tell them we have all classes taught by qualified black belt instructors, pro-family atmosphere, you can make friends for life, fun, great way to learn a self defense system at their own pace. Then I follow this up with, “as you are learning techniques, you get so wrapped up in learning techniques, and your focus is so pin pointed on the move you forget you are working out.”
A few months later if the diet is in check most students see and feel the difference in their body and the way their clothes are fitting. So here is some advice if you are reading this and you are saying to yourself..”is this dude talking to me?” Yes I am, get up and give us a call and start now, NOT MONDAY, NOT NEXT WEEK! NOW! Don’t give me the “I need to get in shape speech first” or “after New Year rolls around”, In fact that is when I am busiest. So do it now not later. See you on the mats!

This has nothing to do with BJJ OR MARTIAL ARTS! But you need to rock on the mats like this guy! Be a rock star on the mats and if all else fails kill it with fire.

QCA has spoken – so sorry Chung Kims and all other martial arts academies that did not make the cut to be the best in the QCA

Competition – Should you compete?

Posted by | Uncategorized | No Comments

I often am asked from parents and students who are just starting to train in martial arts here at Tarpein’s Academies if they should compete or is it mandatory to do so.  I always assure them it is not mandatory at all, and to be honest I don’t feel competition is for everyone.

Personally I thinking competition is good for people that are ready to give it a try and go into this kind of atmosphere knowing that win, lose or draw they walk away with a better appreciation of whatever martial arts they are training in, karate, kickboxing, or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Some personal advise take it or leave it, make sure you understand the rules of the event you are competing.

For example Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is really in my opinion is one of the best martial arts that have been introduced to the world. Now that opens a can of worms for rules. There are many BJJ events gaining traction or been in the event game for a long time and each event has their own set of rules. Keep in mind we are all doing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu but the game is played a little different according to each event. There is the IBJJF – NAGA-5 – U.S. Grappling, ADCC  and smaller events like Sasquatch Open-Combat Corner- ect.

My personal experience with doing tournaments in BJJ and karate is I always leave the event with a new perspective on various aspects on my own game or training.

One of the greatest things I walk away from competition is the people I meet up with or new people I have meet at the event. I have made some friends along the way and with Facebook, twitter, Instagram it’s even easier to stay in touch, trade ideas or meet up at the next event or the next seminar. So if you think you are ready for competition, talk to your coach and get their input or just go for it. See you on the mats!

New Year of the Tiger T-Shirts are here in hand and all pre-orders are waiting for pick up. (at Tarpein’s Dojo)

Vote for your Favorite t-shirt series!

Hello everyone! This year 2014 I decided to run a series of t-shirts in the Quad Cities, and its been a huge success. I decided to make a T-shirt for each of the Chinese Zodiac signs. In fact I did 13 this year, one is not part of the Zodiac but just a great print. I like to think these are mostly original and have a martial arts, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, Karate flair to them. But you can be the judge, click on the shop tab.

So anyone here in the Quad Cities (Davenport, Bettendorf, Moline,Rock Island) can have a t-Shirt to rep Tarpeins Martial Arts and Tarpeins Dojo or their zodiac sign.  Keep in mind if you are on my site or a former student I do ship T-shirts and all other merchandise  to students I have trained and became friends from all over the USA.

ox-tee This is my favorite.
