What makes BJJ different from other martial arts?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu differs from other martial arts in that it provides solutions for all possible stages of combat. Other disciplines like Tae Kwon Do focus on striking and rely on a person’s strength and speed to deliver damage, but speed and strength doesn’t matter when you’re on your back. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu differs from other martial arts fundamentally. While other martial arts rely heavily on strength and speed, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu relies on superior technique and leverage.
Is Jiu-Jitsu safe?
At Tarpeins Next Generation Jiu-Jitsu Academy safety is paramount. Accidents may happen, however, lack of seriousness during training and the resultant careless application of technique or counters contribute greatly to injury. Careless practice is disrespectful to the spirit of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.
Who can learn Jiu-Jitsu?
Practically anyone can utilize the techniques created by Carlos Gracie. Carlos Gracie, when he created his revolutionary system, weighed no more than 135 lbs. The core principle of Jiu-Jitsu is to provide a method for smaller, weaker individuals to protect themselves from bigger, stronger attackers.
Is BJJ good exercise?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can provide you with far more extensive results than typical aerobic exercise. The resistance encountered while rolling provides you with a good base to improve your core strength through intense abdominal workout, increase your muscle tone, and reduce you body fat while improving your balance, bodily coordination, cardio vascular capacity, and muscular endurance.
What do I wear my first time (Intro Class) to class?
The best thing to wear to a first class is a shirt and shorts. A mouthpiece is also recommended and although it’s not required it is recommended that guys wear an athletic support.
Well it’s that time of year again. I go to a lot of functions, business meeting/parties for the holidays and I can always count on the reliable, “Hey, you train martial arts…man I need to get in shape!” Usually they are mentioning they gained weight from eating all their children’s Halloween candy…then the over eating flows right into the Thanksgiving feast and how they love eating all this delicious food. Then going right into the Christmas swing of more over eating and diners and parties with their friends and co-workers. I wish I had a dollar every time I got this tossed at me.
I can say I would be driving a Lamborghini. I don’t mind talking about this to anyone, in fact, I love talking about martial arts- Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, MMA, NHB, Karate. Kickboxing , boxing, wrestling, Judo anything at all , when this happens I am in my zone.
So the next question I get is how much is it? I then follow with whats your health worth to you? I get a blank stare at times. Then I tell them to come in and try a free class or a free week if that is what you need to see the benefits of a great program here at Tarpeins Dojo’s and Martial Arts. If they are interested in hearing more, I tell the potential student some great thing the academies offer.
I tell them we have all classes taught by qualified black belt instructors, pro-family atmosphere, you can make friends for life, fun, great way to learn a self defense system at their own pace. Then I follow this up with, “as you are learning techniques, you get so wrapped up in learning techniques, and your focus is so pin pointed on the move you forget you are working out.”
A few months later if the diet is in check most students see and feel the difference in their body and the way their clothes are fitting. So here is some advice if you are reading this and you are saying to yourself..”is this dude talking to me?” Yes I am, get up and give us a call and start now, NOT MONDAY, NOT NEXT WEEK! NOW! Don’t give me the “I need to get in shape speech first” or “after New Year rolls around”, In fact that is when I am busiest. So do it now not later. See you on the mats!
